I have started playing mechwarrior 4 mercenaries. My question is: Some lancemates are more expensive than others, do they perform much better? In other words, do you get your money's worth?

Short Answer: No

Long Answer: Give them mechs with energy weapons that work at a distance. The AI sucks, but provides good support while you run around with the Hammer (AC/20 etc)
