i made the mistake of buying an xbox when the first came out.. paying the full $300 to find out later that they used crappy dvd drives in the thing.. now i have had it about a year and a half.. and for the last several months its been giving me read errors.. cant recognize the disk.. now its all the time. i tried to clean the eye.. no luck. looked in to what i need to do about it and found out that getting it fixed will cost me almost the price of new one.

Only time I have had a problem with reading an XBox game was with a borrowed Soldier of Fortune Double Helix. In fact I convinced them to take it back ... the replacement was bad also. (Multiple Xbox's cannot read that disk). Bad batch of discs.

Sal, I get the same exact issue. Where did you find out the cost of the replacement? Are there any 3rd party drives or maybe one could adapt a standard DVD drive (or HAS done it). It seems to happen with some games more than others. Mechassault and Project Gotham in particular.
Let me know if you get anymore info. Right now its a minor annoyance I can live with but in case it gets worse....

i read on the teamxbox forums and the official xbox magazine forums about people with this problem.. from what was said, microsoft knows they used ####ty drives in the early xboxes.. but they still charge you to fix it if its outof waranty.. the only price i saw was 100 bucks. with the price of a new xbox reportedly going do to 150 by te holidays.. it heardly seems worth it.

that isnt supposed to work, i havnt tried it myself.. just going on the info i could dig up. you can get a replacement drive, used for about the same price. i think you can get a new one for about 80 bucks.
i went last week and just got a new xbox.. now when i have a little extra cash i can just replace the drive in the old one and link 'em up.

Odd, I've had my xbox nearly 2 years now with no problems. I occasionally get a 'not an xbox disc' error, but upon taking the disc out of the drive, find that it has dust or a segment of hair (I have a cat, you get cat hair on everything when they shed ) on the disc itself. Blowing the foreign object off fixes the problem.
Have you made sure your discs are clean?

they changed the dvd drives early on... knowing the original ones were problematic. If i had dealt with it when it first started they would have replaced it... but i waited too long.... then took it apart to see what makes it tick. or not tick, as the case may be.
