Doom 3 sucks.
The render quality of the game engine is quite poor...shinemapping looks like plastic and texturing is sub-par in most respects. They thought they could get away with that, though, since everything is in the frickin' dark, which makes zero sense whatsoever for an advanced scientific installation.
Nearly every enemy in the game is effective only at melee range, which means that for them to be even marginally effective the player must not have any room to manuver. This is a true pain in the *** for an experienced FPS player. Most of the time you can't even back up much. All combat takes place at ranges of less then twenty feet. Grenades are not present in Doom 3 for a reason: combat is such that the player would almost certainly blow himself up as well as his enemy. I don't even know why they bothered with guns. You'd be better off with the chainsaw they gave you in the first one.
Almost every enemy is rigged to appear and attack when you are not facing in that direction. Very often your first warning is when you take damage. This is also a severe pain in the ***. Even when I became quite paranoid about checking my back (to the point I would enter most rooms facing backwards, since that was more often where the danger lay), the fact that the appearance of the enemy is set up only to occur when you are not facing that way often prevents them being spotted and dealt with before they get close enough to hurt you.
Combat is singularly different from most FPS games for its LACK of differences: all combat is short-range slugging matches with little opportunity for manuver or tactics. Differences lie only in the weapon the player employs and the number of shots said weapon requires to kill a particular enemy.
In short: get Half-Life 2 if you don't already have it.
