"Entering mechs with infantry?" Fri Jul-27-07 04:17 PM by Stubis
Hi all, new here. Just played through MC2 for the first time and loved it. I've now got wolfman's latest update (revision 35 I believe), and am looking forward to playing through one of his campaigns, and I've got a question: am I supposed to be able to capture an unoccupied mech with infantry? I'm not talking salvaging a downed mech or recovering one from a destroyed hangar, but climbing into one that is apparently just sitting unoccupied on the battlefield. I started a mission, and there's a Marauder just standing there. When enemy infantry get close to it, it seems they are able to get into it, and it powers up and kills all my guys (who are all in either jeeps or are infantry or power-suits at this point). Is there a force-move key or something I am supposed to use in order to capture a mech in this way?
Apologies if this has already been answered in these forums or elsewhere.

I've not played any of wolfman's mods (yet). But in the vanilla game there is no way to do this, because, frankly, you never have any infantry under your control.
There is a mission in Mechcommander (the original game that preceeded MC2) where you have one of your mech pilots supposedly inside an armored vehicle. You go through much of the mission in control this armored vehicle and firing your lasers (or whatever the vehicle was equipped with) to make it the pilot's Masakari mech (a Clan assault class omnimech). Once you get in range of the Masakari, it powers up, as if your pilot has entered it and is now piloting it.
This was something specifically scripted for that mission, not a normal feature of the game. I'm sure something similar could easily be scripted for MC2, but by and large, it's not a feature of the game.
Another comment is that a lot of times you'll find enemy mechs powered down as a trap. They sit in wait, invisible to your sensors, and when you get close enough they hit the "on button" and come at you with weapons blazing! This is most likely what is actually happening in the scenario you describe. A standard infantry isn't likely even skilled enough to pilot a mech.

I scripted this for MC2 like it was described for an MC example above.
In MC2 it is not possible to directly capture a mech. This is unfortunate because it would make the game more interesting. You can only capture mechs in MC2 by salvaging disabled mechs; therefore I invented the "hangar mech" approach as a work around solution. I checked the source code and there are sub routines that chance sides for units depending on conditions. For a mech this is a very complicated procedure (compared to a buiding). You have to allocate a pilot and this is what makes it unique. There is no routine coded that would allow you to capture a mech with a unit and transfer the pilot of the original unit to the captured unit and disable the orignal unit.
Does not exist because it simply never was an intended feature in MC2
