"Speculation Moment"
Sat May-26-07 03:17 PM by Bangy

Jeff Greens blog over at One Up has this bief paragraph:

----------------------------------------
QUOTE:

"Anyhoo, the July issue of GFW is being printed now and will be in mailboxes shortly, and it is, if I may be so bold, and I think I may since this is my blog, a great one. The cover story is one of those OMG WORLD EXCLUSIVES WE SAW IT BEFORE YOU DID HAW HAW stories that magazines love to crow about even though the Internet is making all that irrelevant anyway.

I'm not allowed to tell you what it is yet, but will be posting the cover next Friday, jeebus willing. Suffice it to say it's the new game in one of PC gaming's oldest franchises--a series w/bazillions of fans. Ryan Scott wrote the story and did his usual kickass job, because Ryan KICKS ASS."

-----------------------------------------

Blog URL: http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=8149188&publicUserId=5380367

Using deductive reasoning they have an "exclusive" in a Games For Windows Title. The only publisher that could guarantee complete silence while allowing a print publication to break the story would pretty much be just Microsoft>GFW....right?

One of the oldest franchises with bajillions of fans....

FASA just got finished with Shadowrun (FASA, of course, being whollly owned by MS)

Crimson Skies?....not so old.

Mechwarrior?....old. First game circa 1989-90 ( give or take a year). Fanbase is a shadow of its former self though after the success of Chromehounds and to a lesser extent, Steel Battalion/Tekki it's been discovered that there IS a demand for a solid mecha simulation and not just breezey stuff like Mechassault.

Games For Windows/One Up have already announced Starcraft 2, CoD 4 etc so its not those. The statement implies something not known via the web. I know its grasping for straws but it gives us another week of hopes that will only be cruelly crushed at the end but, hey, lets have some fun with it shall we?

W00T! Fun mode engaged! I will quickly spread this rumor throughout the known MW universe!

Seriously, I think you have to be right. After that interview with Mitch Gitelman where he purposely went out of his way to say nice things about MW, it just has to be. Especially since he said "MS has this Games for Windows" effort going on...AND with all the giant robot steam going on lately (Transformers, et. al.) it JUST HAS TO BE!

In fact, it can't be coincidence that Jeff Green is the GFW Editor and does a blog for 1Up where they had the Mitch Gitelman interview. Too many connections. Sounds like this was all planned ahead of time.

BTW Bangy....Excellent find!!!

Jeff Green responded at QT3 Forums. Got to the 4th page in the thread:

http://www.quartertothree.com/game-talk/showthread.php?t=35855&page=4

so someone guessed correctly in the thread and that includes me as I posted my theory. unfortunately he claims the news is actually pretty "mundane" so I'm thinking MW5 isn't it. I also guessed Renegade II which is an outside chance.

Watch it end up being some dull shiite like Populous.

Finally, lets hope is a next mechwarrior, but with the resent expiriences with the Mechwarrior-Battletech-Mechassult franchise I hope they hire new people to help with the project. I hope is a mech SIM and no an arcade version.

Vam on the front page of Mektek seems to be optimistic --

I've made contact with two official contacts whom will remain nameless and they were not very convincing in denying this development. We are asking as many questions right now as you can think of because we want to know as badly as you do. Stay tuned and keep checking back with us.

I'm not holding my breath though even if the rumor is true. Do any developers "get" MW anymore? I doubt it.

Edit: Nice to see that Jeff Green is still alive. His articles on the last page of CGW years ago were occasionally pretty funny. He replaced Martin Cirulis on the last page, whose MW2 strategies article in the mode of BT fiction was pretty cool.

I was thinking it was Renegade II but now I'm siding with the official Return to Castle Wolfenstein III announcement. Its been well known that Raven has been develping it for awhile now.

I'd be happy to see either one but I'd much rather see MW5.

ah well Nano....one of these days buddy

Final update:

the game is Sim City Societies.

Why have a fun mecha combat game when you can hunker down and do tedious faux resource/asset management when your done with your real-world job?......where do I sign up?

So Bangy...Is Jeff Green's blog a good one to watch for potential MechWarrior news in particular? Or just general new game info?

And are the quarter to three forums really good for new game rumors? If not, what are they especially known for?
